Thangka, as they are termed in Tibetan are also used as a visual for spiritual practice in place of statues. These days, Nepali artists are giving these paintings a modern twist. Sandalwood is rare and expensive because the tree only starts to grow its fragrance after 10 years and the tree can only be harvested after 20 years. When harvesting the trunk, only the inner core containing the natural scent of sandalwood can be sold as quality natural sandalwood. This Mala, otherwise known as prayers beads or rosary is crafted using the very inner core wood that is sourced in India where Sandalwood is a native tree.
